El Centro Regional Medical Center Selects Aerohive WLAN

Cooperative Control Architecture Selected for Exceptional Value and Technical Superiority

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 15, 2008 — Aerohive Networks, creators of the controller-less "cooperative control" wireless LAN (WLAN) architecture, today announced that El Centro Regional Medical Center (ECRMC), a 165-bed acute care facility in Southern California's Imperial Valley, has deployed an Aerohive wireless LAN solution in its hospital and clinics. ECRMC chose Aerohive's WLAN because of its low cost and technical superiority, including sophisticated HIPAA-grade security and the ability to seamlessly upgrade to higher-bandwidth 802.11n equipment. ECRMC runs a wide array of applications on the Aerohive wireless LAN, including mission-critical systems in the emergency room and operating rooms, the Hospital Information System (HIS), and quality review management software. An in-depth case study of ECRMC's selection and deployment of the Aerohive network is available at http://www.aerohive.com/resources/el-centro-regional-medical-center.

"We found Aerohive's unique cooperative control wireless LAN equipment compelling enough to select them over vendors with longer histories in the healthcare arena," said John Gaede, director, information systems, El Centro Regional Medical Center. "Our deployment success has proven the wisdom of our decision. Aerohive's pioneering technology and outstanding customer support have our highest recommendation."

ECRMC's legacy autonomous access points did not provide secure fast roaming, a critical feature for the bedside network access and VoWLAN the hospital hoped to deploy. The autonomous access points also did not provide the security, resiliency, and reliability the hospital required.

ECRMC selected Aerohive's WLAN solution after an in-depth study revealed its technical superiority over other vendors' offerings. Aerohive's cooperative control access points ("HiveAPs") provide secure fast roaming, ease of management, and state-of-the-art security without network controllers or overlay networks. Eliminating controllers from the network substantially reduces the cost of Aerohive solutions. Aerohive's cooperative control networks are also more reliable than controller-based networks, because controllers' "single points of failure" are eliminated. Removing controllers from the network also eliminates the bandwidth bottlenecks, latency, and jitter that result from backhauling traffic through a controller, creating an ideal platform for demanding applications, such as VoWLAN.

ECRMC's upgrade to the Aerohive network was simple and fast, requiring only minimal resources. ECRMC's in-house team has deployed the network itself, without installation assistance.

"Aerohive cooperative control wireless LANs are ideal for healthcare providers and other organizations seeking to support demanding, mission-critical applications and faced with limited budgets and IT resources," said Sheen Khoury, executive vice president, sales and field operations, Aerohive Networks. "We provide a painless upgrade to legacy autonomous access points, cutting-edge management, mobility, and security, and an easy upgrade path to 802.11n technology."

ECRMC has already deployed 45 HiveAPs and plans to deploy more than 75 HiveAPs throughout its hospital and remote clinics. The network will soon support many more wireless devices and applications, such as handheld Symbol devices and tablet PCs, VoWLAN, RFID tracking, new network-connected bedside devices, and the Vocera Communications System.
