Wellington College Enables High-Density Bandwidth Access for Thousands of Devices with Aerohive’s 802.11ax Access Points

Milpitas, Calif. — September 24, 2018 — Aerohive Networks® (NYSE: HIVE), a Cloud Networking leader, today announced that Wellington College, one of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious schools, has implemented Aerohive’s 802.11ax Access Points Wi-Fi solution. The solution can provide high-bandwidth access, including video streaming capability, to more than 2,500 connected devices in the college’s performing arts facility, used as a central gathering point during events and assemblies. It will also support the teaching and learning needs of 1,100 students and staff on a continued basis across the college’s 400 acre campus.

Wi-Fi is an essential element in the classroom at Wellington College, to the point where the school restructured the way technology is used to enhance teaching and learning. Collaborative learning is one of the main focuses of the college, and Wi-Fi is a key enabler of that. An imperative for achieving this was to ensure access to a reliable, easy to access and manageable service for both its staff and student body.

Security was also a significant consideration. A key requirement was to deploy a system that would link-in with all of the solutions provided by the college’s security vendors, as well as be capable of handling dense clusters of up to 2,500 devices in close proximity. Additionally, the IT team wanted a seamless solution that would work with Microsoft’s Active Directory, as well as with the school’s single sign on.

After a thorough review of available options, including Aerohive’s architecture and new 802.11ax offering, Wellington chose Aerohive because of its reliability, ease of use and manageability.

“We needed a solution that was able to address the high density of clients we’re seeing today, while simultaneously being flexible and capable of adapting to increasing demands in the future. Aerohive is able to meet these requirements as well as display a forward-thinking approach that was aligned with the college’s own vision,” said Tony Whelton, Director of IT Services and Development at Wellington College.

Commenting on Aerohive’s Access Point deployment at Wellington College, Mathew Edwards, Director of Product Marketing, Aerohive said: “Wi-Fi in high density public areas has often been unreliable as until now, bandwidth was shared between endpoint devices. 802.11ax solves that issue and is ideally suited to schools, universities, sports stadiums, train stations, airports and similar environments.”

The initial deployment began by replacing Wellington’s existing Wi-Fi units with new Aerohive units and was carried out over the college’s summer holidays. Up against a tight two-month deadline, Wellington College was pleased that the installation of the required access points was completed seamlessly and on time.
Since the initial deployment, Aerohive has installed 450 access points across Wellington’s academic, social and boarding areas, allowing for a range of devices to run across the college’s network, including laptops, mobile phones and tablets.

Commenting on the deployment of Aerohive’s Access Points, Tony Whelton said: “With 802.11ax Access Points, it’s not just planning for the future, it’s about handling huge numbers of legacy clients (802.11ac and below), with little effort. The power of these Access Points, combined with the flexible dual 5GHz radios, it means we can provide the best possible service for existing 802.11n and 802.11ac clients, while being ready to deliver additional capacity for a future 802.11ax environment.”

In the time since Wellington adopted Aerohive, the College has put technology at the heart of teaching and learning and has now become a Microsoft Showcase School. This would not have been possible without a stable network enabling devices to connect continuously and without interruption.

Whelton said: “Over the next year and beyond, we’re planning to upgrade many of our wireless clients to 802.11ax. On top of that, we fully expect an influx in 802.11ax guest and BYOD devices. Aerohive’s 802.11ax APs provide us with a forward-looking and adaptable infrastructure to meet future demands.”
